Valve CEO Gabe Newell Explains Why Source 2 Engine Won’t Be For Everyone

Valve has decided to ramp their older source engine and work on a newer Source 2 engine, even though this engine has already been implemented in games like Dota 2, we are yet to see more games take advantage of this engine.

Gabe Newell, the CEO of valve commenting on the Source 2 engine said “if it’s useful for people, it’s available for them to use”, meaning that it is for developers who are genuinely interested in using it, and will not be a major replacement to other engines like Unity.

During the interview, Gabe also said “For us, it’s insanely useful – it does exactly what we need an engine to do and it’s evolving in the directions that we think are important” he added “For our developers it works great, for other developers it’s not nearly as useful as Unity. So it’s sort of like, it’s here if people want it.”

This means that Source 2 is more like a personal upgrade to their current engine and is not targeted for developers to use exclusively over engines like Unity.
